From spring (the exact date has yet to be revealed) new “Smart” motorways will become “Live”.
These motorways may have under surface detection equipment as well as cameras and ANPR. The object is to create a safer environment to keep the traffic flowing.
This will allow the authorities to close a lane using a red “X” and anyone caught ignoring that closure will receive an automated letter and fine.
Currently the system is used to direct traffic onto the hard shoulder when volumes are high, or introduce graded speed limits when congestion or a hazard is looming.
Such motorways include M1, M4, M5, M6, M42. Others will be upgraded in time for all the electric cars to arrive and break down because they have become confused by the myriad electronic messages.
Drivers of such cars may then wish to add to their car tool kit a very long extension lead to recharge the car from a nearby farmhouse!
