We previously talked about the new DVSA MOT test scheme designed to combat fraudulent MOTs. This new initiative focuses on tackling ‘Ghost MOTs’ and the testers who carry them out. Under the scheme, MOT testers must now provide photographic evidence of the vehicle in the testing bay to prove it has been physically inspected.
Despite the DVSA’s efforts, former MOT inspectors have shared their views on the scheme, revealing a new angle on where the DVSA may be falling short.
It has been suggested that a reduction in the number of MOT inspectors has contributed to the rise in fraudulent MOTs. With fewer inspectors on the ground, there are fewer inspections—creating more opportunities for fraudulent activity to slip through the cracks.
The new DVSA system allows for more remote monitoring of MOT testers. According to the head of MOT policy, this approach enables inspectors to better target where physical checks are most needed.
A Freedom of Information request revealed that in 2023, the DVSA retested a random selection of 1,487 vehicles—and shockingly, around 10% of those should not have passed their MOT.
If extrapolated across the number of vehicles on UK roads, this equates to potentially 2.9 million vehicles being driven with potentially dangerous issues.
With that alarming figure in mind, it’s clear that MOT testers must treat their responsibilities with the seriousness they deserve. All tests should follow DVSA guidelines, and all related documentation must be accurate and complete.
Any discrepancies in vehicle testing are likely to result in DVSA prosecution.
