The recent cold snap highlights the need to look after the workforce in such conditions.
HSE offer advice
Most employees in a garage or even retail environment will need to deal with the cold both indoors and outdoors. You need to maintain a reasonable working temperature so 16 or 13 if it is strenuous work. The heating systems clearly must not give off dangerous or offensive fumes. In outdoor work then the following points should be noted.
- ensure the PPE is appropriate
- encourage more frequent rest breaks and hot drinks
- question whether the work has to be carried out at particularly cold times
- make sure employees understand the possibility of cold stress
Thermal comfort is important since workers may cut corners to get out of the cold and the ability to concentrate can reduce which, of course, increases the risk of errors.
