The art of face-to-face conversation is dying, and our communication channels have changed over the years. In the 1980s and 1990s, the slogan “It’s good to talk” was popularised to promote the benefits of communication and human connection. That was before the introduction of mobile telephones—now, the most popular form of communication is instant messaging via mobile apps. So, do you know if your employees are healthy?
The reason I ask this question is because the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reported in a press release last month that a car dealership had been fined more than £200,000 after their employees were exposed to risks from vibrating tools.
Two of their workers were diagnosed with Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) after regularly using hand tools like random-orbital sanders and reciprocating saws for car body repairs.
The HSE investigation found that the company had not implemented adequate management arrangements to assess and monitor employees’ exposure to vibration. There was no suitable and sufficient risk assessment, and control measures had not been implemented—despite the likelihood of the exposure action value being exceeded.
The most concerning part of this press release was that one of the employees had been suffering from the condition for approximately eight years. The employee stated: “My fingers would go white, and I would lose feeling. This was particularly bad in damp or cold weather. I can say that over the years my symptoms seem to have got worse. The blanching has spread, and I find it hard to pick up small items.”
Now, you may be thinking, “This doesn’t affect my business,” but you need to ask yourself the question: Is hand-arm vibration a problem in my workplace? The HSE specifically names the motor vehicle manufacture and repair industry as one of the sectors affected. If you’re unsure, the HSE has produced a helpful guide, Hand-arm vibration at work, available at: www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg175.htm
HAVS may not be an issue within your business, but you still need to consider health surveillance to assess and monitor the health of your employees.
