The World Cup starts this week and as such this usually creates a few issues in the workplace. So How should an employer deal with this?
ACAS have published guidance as to the various issues that may arise throughout the tournament, which can be found here.
The key issue will be absence that people will take in order to watch the games. Obviously if people book annual leave and this has been authorised then there will be no issue, but if people simply don’t report in for work, or more commonly ‘pull a sickie’ to watch the match then this is actionable under the company disciplinary procedure. Of course if someone is genuinely ill then you cannot action anything against them. The key here is to keep your wits about you and monitor things closely.
