Under new regulations, which will have effect in relation to children whose expected week of birth (or matched for adoption) falls on or after 3 April 2011, new rights for fathers have been introduced.
Fathers can take up to 26 weeks (minimum two weeks) additional paternity leave if the mother has returned to work. If taken during the 39 week Maternity Pay Period it will be paid leave (paid at the same rate as Maternity Pay). It will not be permitted until 20 weeks after the birth or adoption. It must end not later than 12 months after the birth/adoption and can only be taken in multiples of one week.
