Faking sickness – how not to get found out

A funny case which hit the news this week regarding the Commonwealth Games. A nursery school worker was filmed taking part in the opening ceremony after they had called their employer claiming to be sick.

The question is what can the employer do in such a situation?

The employee in question has committed gross misconduct, and thus the employee could be dismissed instantly. It is only so clear cut in this case because there is very clear evidence (from the TV recording) that the employee had lied to their employer. Unless you have clear evidence the employee had faked an illness the matter may not be so clean cut.

If you have any suspicion an employee is faking illness, you must thoroughly investigate the situation before taking an action. If you have strong evidence, you can then proceed forward.
